Living in Colorado is wonderful. I'm really fortunate in that I've lived in some of the most beautiful, most interesting and most friendly places on Earth.
A simple intro would be to tell you I'm Irish-Latvian by extraction, a Geordie by birth and an American by choice.
Tyne Dock might not have been the most beautiful of places but "community spirit" could not have been bettered.
I grew up in the Midlands surrounded by fields, woods, ponds and history. The first thing I ever remember writing was when I was ten. It was a history of Coventry.
Suddenly the world didn't just have length, breadth and height; now it had a new dimension - time.
Everything about things past drew me in - people, places, events, objects - everything had a story waiting for me to discover.
And then I joined the Boy Scouts - St Columba's Own. Not being Scottish or a Presbyterian didn't seem to bother anyone else so I didn't give it much thought, either. My world was now filled with camping and hiking, singing and story-telling, history, geography and Country music (I know!).
On one of our camping expeditions we passed through Sheffield - I was 14. And after walking down the main street for half an hour while my friends slept in the Peace Gardens (we'd missed the bus back home) I decided that when I left Coventry I'd move here. So I did. Fortunately the reason I left home was to go to college - History and Geography students needed me, I was certain of that.
After leaving college I taught for two years. I met and fell head-over-heels in love with the Phys Ed teacher. We married and wanted to start a family - not on a teacher's salary, I thought, so I joined Burroughs Machines as a Territory Manager. I took to selling like a duck to water.
After ten years of selling, designing and writing software, installing computer systems and training customer staff I started my own business - sales training. My incredible partners and I built the company well beyond sales training - IT, management, customer care, interactive audio programs, business consultancy, we did it all. We were bought by one of our clients - Britain's largest and most successful motivational consultants.
Our children grew and left home. We spent so many holidays in the United States that we fell in love with America, Americans and the "American way", so in 1997 we waived goodbye to dear old Blighty and said Hello to the Gulf Coast of Florida.
I wrote training programs, led workshops - both in the US and back in England - became a Realtor and thought we'd live happily ever after in the Florida sunshine - happy to visit the mountains rather than live in them. But then we discovered Colorado
So here we are in Loveland - a beautiful, safe, cultured and friendly city on the Front Range. Now I write, offer consultancy and travel around thinking just how fortunate I am.
And, all being well, it will continue for a long, long time!
